DESCRIPTION: An infrequently found smut that causes the anthers of the effected plant to become thickened and give rise to a purple-brown spore mass that is easily overlooked. The shoots of infested plants may show a yellowish tint. SPORES: The spores are globose to sub-ellipsoid, brown with raised meshes on the surface that are rounded to regularly polygonal and are 5-8µm in width. HABITAT: On the anthers of various plants in the Chickweed and Stitchwort families. SEASON: Summer.
